Program Rationale

The availability of trained instructors of Cree language is a vital component of self-determination for Cree communities

Program Goals

1. To prepare Cree people for employment as instructors of Cree language;

2. To provide a recognized level of post- secondary training and certification for instructors of Cree language;

3. To provide an opportunity for Cree people to prepare for studies towards a degree in Linguistics or Education, with a focus on teaching an aboriginal lan- guage, or a degree in Native Studies;

4. To train instructors to transmit cultural knowledge through Cree language instruction;

5. To develop trainees’ knowledge of the Cree language; and

6. To promote the teaching and learning of Cree language in Cree communities.

Program Certification

A Diploma in Cree Language Instruction is awarded upon successful completion of the program. To qualify for this diploma, trainees must receive at least a 2.3 grade point in each course taken.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this training program are prepared for employment as Instructors of Cree Language in schools, colleges, or in other educational institutions. Graduates have the knowledge and ability to organize and direct a Cree Language Program in an educational institution. Graduates are prepared to continue in Education, Linguistics or Native Studies.

Admission Requirements

Senior High School Diploma, or a demonstrated oral competency in Cree 20 (an ability to conduct a conversation in Cree), as well as a demonstrated basic knowledge of Cree Culture and the ability to work with people.

Assessment of English Skills at a Grade 10 completion level.

Schedule of Delivery

This is a four-course, eighteen-credit Diploma Program. It is completed over three summers.
